There will be six Pre-Congress Symposiums taking place on Thursday 12 May 2016 and these will be held at the Cairns Convention Centre

All six workshops are full day programs and will commence at 10am and conclude at approximately 4pm. Numbers are limited for each workshop so register early to avoid disappointment.

Breast Cancer Care

Time: 1000 - 1600

Description: 

The 2016 Congress themes of distance, culture, workforce and knowledge have informed each session of this symposium, specifically tailored to address gaps and initiatives in breast cancer care.  The program includes international and national acclaimed breast cancer experts, including the Congress international keynote speaker, Professor Margaret Barton Burke and internationally acclaimed psychologist, Dr Phyllis Butow.  Delegates attending this symposium will be presented with updates on Aboriginal survival rates, breast cancer treatments including the evolving role of immunotherapy, young women and breast cancer and breast cancer screening.  The symposium will set the scene for a diverse and targeted Congress for breast care nurses caring for patients with cancer.

Vascular Access Device & Infusion Therapy Symposium

Time: 1000 - 1600

Description: 

Led by two respected and well published international vascular access clinicians Nancy Moureau and Jocelyn Hill, this symposium will provide attendees with up to date evidence based insights on key topics pertinent to all nurses caring for patients with vascular access devices.  Topics presented will include; skin colonisation and line infections, needless connector technology, community infusion programs, CVAD maintenance including flushing, dressing selection and securement.  This symposium is a must for nurses wanting to translate vascular access research into clinical practice.

Radiation Oncology

Description: 

After a hugely successful and highly evaluated Radiation Oncology symposium at Congress in Perth last year, the Radiation Oncology Nursing Specialist Practice Network has developed a Radiation Oncology Nursing symposium that builds on from the success of last year.  The symposium will be presented by experts in radiation oncology and will highlight new technologies in radiation therapy and the impact these technologies have on the nursing role in caring for these patients.  The symposium will explore the very important topic of radiation induced sexual health impacts and evidence based practices in managing patients undergoing radiotherapy.

Gynae-Oncology

Time: 1000 - 1600

Description: 

This symposium will benefit nurses and allied health professionals involved in the care of women with gynaecological cancers.  The symposium will focus on current issues related to the care and management of women affected by gynaecological malignancies, including screening, treatment side effects, psychological support, follow-up and survivorship.  Attendees will gain insights into current projects and pathways of care for women with Gynaecological cancers throughout Australia.

Advanced Practice: Immuno-Oncology

Time: 1000 - 1600

Description: 

This symposium focuses on the evolving area of immuno-oncology in the treatment of malignancy. Delegates attending this symposium will be presented with an overview of immune system physiology and the role that the immune system plays in fighting cancer.  Immunological targets, incorporated modalities and modes of action of this expanding artillery will be described in detail.  The unique and non-cytotoxic side effect profile of some of the key immunological agents will be presented and will include the prevention, detection and management of some of the common and critical side effects experienced with these agents.  To finish off the symposium, attendees will have the opportunity to gain insights into the nursing management of patients undergoing treatment with immune-therapies through interactive case study discussion led by a cancer nursing expert.

Research Workshop

Time: 1000 - 1600

Description: 

This workshop, facilitated by leading cancer nurse researchers in Australia is designed for novice researchers from clinical and non-clinical domains.  The workshop will be presented in two parts with the first part focusing on developing and completing a research plan and the second part focused on writing for success. 

The first part of the workshop will be undertaken in a supported facilitation format, with established nurse researchers working with participants to write up a partially completed mock research plan. Specifically, participants they will be guided through the process of completing various sections of the research plan.

In the second part of the workshop, through showcasing of exemplars, facilitators will provide participants with useful tips for writing for success, focusing on grant applications, abstract writing and conference presentations.  Participants are encouraged to bring their quality activity and research proposals to this workshop to enable expert facilitation in evolving these initiatives during the workshop.
